Sports Magazine

Welcome! This ‘Snappy, easy to read Sports magazine’ will be available every month. A main feature will be covered on a high profile, professional competitor, then on the other scale, there will be an article on ‘Up and coming’ sports people who’ll be interviewed on their training procedures, ambitions, achievement and goals etc.

For I believe it’s important to support and showcase the next generation and their journey. Also major events, some involving the general public’s participation, and encouraging healthy living.

You’ll find us, in all the Lee Valley Sport Centres, in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Venues, and some Leisure Centre in the Southeast London area…

Usain Bolt is a Jamaican, 100 and 200 metre runner. He is a 6 times Olympic Champion, 12 times World Champion, Triple World Record Holder and to me still is the fastest man on the planet. But he has now retired and is thinking of becoming a footballer.

Q: You’ve kind of done everything you need to do in sports but during that quiet moment when you come out of your blocks, do you ever get nervous, or feel anxious?

I never normally get nervous. It’s all about the execution on the 100 metres, so I just have to execute to what I have been working on, the training. I have been doing a lot of work on the start, I just have to execute on the day. (Go to Issue Page to view magazine – edition 24).

David Weir – Disabled Athlete
Interview

A 37 year old former British Paralympic wheelchair athlete. He has won a total of six gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games, and has won the London Marathon seven times.. He will be competing in the 2018 London Marathon, so it could be an eight times winner…

Comment:
Dave Weir admitted he is simply not good enough anymore after failing to defend any of the four track titles he won at London 2012, in Rio 2017. He said, ‘A lot of people put the gold medals around my neck before I got to Rio. I knew that London was special and it was never going to be achieved again.

He has retired from track racing, which was after the 2017 London Marathon and did not compete at the London World Championships in 2017 but he did win the London Marathon for the seventh time, and will be hoping to will again in 2018.

Main Feature: Matthew Hudson Smith – 400 metres runner
Matthew Hudson-Smith, was born in Wolverhampton, he is a British track and field sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. He holds a personal best of 44.48 seconds for the distance set at the 2016 Olympic Games.

He was a gold medallist in the 4×400 metres relay at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and a silver medallist in 400 metres at the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zürich, Switzerland. He was also a double bronze medallist at the 2013 European Athletics Junior Championships.

She is the fastest athlete in the world by over 3 minutes. Radcliffe is a former world champion in the marathon, half marathon and cross country.

Nick Dempsey – Windsurfer

Nick Dempsey is a 36 year old, Windsurfer – Men’s RS:X class.
He became the first man to win three Olympics medals in windsurfing when he won silver in the Olympics Rio 2016, adding to a silver won in the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze from the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Q: What person or people got you into Windsurfing?
Well, my dad, he had an old Windsurfer back in the 80’s, we’d go to Peterborough and there’d be a small lake, being on the water is great as a kid, yes, it’s just was so great to be having fun.

Q: What inspired you to get involved into Windsurfing and take it to the next level?
Well, I just wanted to have fun, I started Windsurfing when I was seven, so if you’re anything like my sons, I have two boys, if it’s enjoyable and it’s fun then you’ll go back to it. I fell in love with it and still as an old man, I still enjoy it and I’m still doing it.

Dina-Asher-Smith – AthleteInterviewed
She is only 19 years old, so this young lady has a really bright future ahead of her, for she has already won the 2013 European Junior Championships, the World Championships for the 4x100m relay winning bronze, the 2014 World Junior Championships and 2015 European Indoor Championships, (silver medallist). When I met her, she wore a big smile, and giggled and laughed a lot which was so endearing, a pleasant girl, warm and a typical teenager, who’s career hopefully will be speeding, swiftly up to the heavens.

Eilidh Child – Athlete
Eilidh was born in the beautiful city of Perth, in Scotland. As a youngster growing up, she was an amazing swimmer and twice won the U13 Scottish Schools butterfly swimming title. She was formerly a full-time PE teacher at Perth Grammar School, but her talent, began to lean towards track and field, so eventually she decided to relocate to Bath, to focus further on her training.
And now at the age of 28, she is a British and Scottish athlete who specialises in the 400 metres hurdles.

Dark raven hair, 6 foot 6 inches and the speed in his legs that will leave you gasping, for running fast around the track, is what he does best, the giant from Thornton Heath, for the boy with ambition and drive will not be stopped.

During the 80’s, watching Wimbledon was entertaining especially when John McEnroe was playing with his confrontational behaviour on-court which frequently landed him in trouble with the umpires and tennis authorities. If you’ve not heard of him before, he is an American former World No.1 professional tennis player, rated one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

You might not have heard of the European under-23 champion, David Omoregie, of the 110m hurdles before, but he has made his debut at the 2015 Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in London and the World Championships in Beijing. He is a teenage hurdling sensation, only 19-year-old from Cardiff, a Welshman who was born to run and jump fast.

Q: How did your sporting career develop?
I started when I was three, and my Dad ran a 100 metre race and won a bronze medal in 1984, that wasn’t for tennis, but then he retired, he just took up tennis as a hobbies, then him and my Mum had me.

Tim Henman, now 40 years old is an English retired professional tennis player. At the height of his career he was ranked No. 4 in the world and he has 15 titles to his name, although a Grand Slam tournament always eluded him.

I found Etienne, so down to earth, his feet were firmly on the ground. He reminded me of the young ambitious men, that I grew up with, with hopes and dreams, and the determination to make a difference. He was charming and very willing to share his knowledge and experience.

Theo Walcott is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for Arsenal and the England national team. He was born in Stanmore, London but grew up in Compton, Berkshire.

Laura Trott
– Track Cyclist
Laura Trott is an English track and road cyclist who specialises in the team pursuit and omnium disciplines. She was born a month prematurely with a collapsed lung and was later diagnosed with asthma. So she was recommended by doctors to take up sport to help regulate her breathing better, so this was the start of her sporting life.

She grew up in Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, where she attended Turnford School. And first began cycling when her mother decided to take up the sport to lose weight, Laura and her sister joined their mother and Laura then became serious about the sport. Her older sister Emma Trott is a road cyclist too.

Long Jumper

Chris Tomlinson who is born in Middlesbrough, is an English long jumper. Aged 33 years old, he now competes for athletics club Newham and Essex Beagles and his coach is Frank Attoh.

Katie Archibald is a 20 year old Scottish racing cyclist from Glasgow, Scotland, who currently rides on the track for Great Britain and the Scottish Cycling Braveheart.com team.

Q: Who inspired you to play tennis? It was my dad as he used to play once he stopped wheelchair racing. He gave me a racket when I was three at the Israel Open and I haven’t put one down since.

Ryan Giggs 
– Footballer
yan Giggs is a Welsh football coach and former player who played for Manchester United. His debut was 18 years ago at the age of 17, in March 1991. Sir Alex Ferguson became impressed by the youngster’s dribbling ability, so he took the young man on to play for United. He became part of the now famous 1992 FA Youth Cup winning United team that included team-mates, such as Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers. He is well known for his running up and down the pitch, his ball possession and the ability to create goal scoring opportunities.

I think Dwain Chambers has a lot to smile about even though he decide not to compete in the XX Commonwealth Games in Glagow, so he could focus on his race at the Athletics European Championships, and sadly didn’t win a medal.. he still gives his all.
And at the age of 36, and the hype about the new wave of young British sprinting talent, could have weakened his spirits but he tore past his opponents fair and square, to qualified in two major tournaments this year, which is an achievement to be proud of.

s a really calm, intelligent and charming young man, I found him down to earth, there was a warmth about him, that made you feel at ease, and without him being aware of it, as if you knew or met him somewhere before. The towering 6 footer talks about coming 4th in the Rabobank World Cup 2014 and more.

Q: What was it like coming fourth, just outside the medals in the World Cup, how did you feel about that?
It’s disappointing to not get a medal, when you have the opportunity too but we’re world ranked coming fourth, it’s not under achievement but it’s not where we want to be in the long run.

David “Dai” Greene 
–  Athlete
David “Dai” Greene is 28 years old, and specialises in the 400 metres hurdles event and competes internationally for both Wales and Great Britain. Dai is the current Commonwealth and former World Champion. He is also the former European Champion from the 2010 championships, after choosing not to defend his title in the run up to London 2012 Olympics.
He was born in Felinfoel near Llanelli, and showed potential in sports and wanted to be a footballer like his hero Ryan Giggs.

Perri Shakes-Drayton
  Athlete
Perri Shakes-Drayton is a 24 year old British athlete 400 metres hurdler. She was born in London but is of Grenadian origin. She studied sports science at Brunel University, and has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, not long after, by tirelessly competing in many numerous competitions and championships, she eventually won the European Junior Championships, silver medal, in the 400m hurdles in Hengelo 2007. Now she’s gone on to shape a career in competing with the best athletes in the world.

Sean Fitzpatrick
Rugby Player
The former New Zealand All Blacks rugby captain Sean Fitzpatrick is a very polite man, with a gentle, relaxed persona that settled down an anxious hotel room full of media people. For as he walked in, he was calm, and with a fixed smile on his face, welcomed everyone there. His face, after an hour or two still imposed a mischievous grin, imprinted above his chin, as if he knew something we didn’t know. Then he sat comfortably on a stool facing the press, whilst waiting for questions to explode. .
